Pevensey and Westham MP, Huw Merriman, has called a public meeting in Pevensey to ensure that local people are aware of East Sussex County Council’s forthcoming consultation on library services.

Huw was concerned to hear that one of the proposals being put out to public consultation by East Sussex County Council is the closure of Pevensey Bay Library. He wants to make sure that local residents are aware that their library may be under threat and encourage them to respond to the consultation.

Huw said “I understand that the County Council’s budgets are under pressure and they have a responsibility to ensure that their resources are allocated as well as possible. However, I also know that the library is a vital hub for the local community of Pevensey and Pevensey Bay. I therefore want to make sure local residents are aware of the proposals from County and, if they want to keep their library, that they respond to the consultation and have their voices heard. Libraries are part of the fabric of community life, providing so much more than a book lending service. My family and I are regular users of our local library which is also under threat, so I know how upsetting it can be to think that your local community may lose something of great value.

“I am currently organising a public meeting in Pevensey, with the help of locally-elected representatives, so that local residents can learn more about the County Council’s proposals and find out how they can respond to the public consultation.”

Further details of the public meeting will be advertised locally and on Huw’s website once a date and venue has been finalised.
