GREG DISCUSSES A LIFE IN POLITICS WITH BEXHILL COLLEGE STUDENTS

13.01.14 for immediate release: Bexhill MP, Greg Barker, joined Politics students at Bexhill College last Monday to talk to them about his role as a Member of Parliament and life at Westminster.

Greg was also joined by Huw Merriman, the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bexhill and Battle, which gave the students a unique opportunity to quiz an experienced politician nearing the end of his Westminster career and a local district councillor hoping to start a new career in Parliament at the General Election in May.

Greg told the students that being local MP had been an honour and privilege. He explained that an MP can help constituents on an individual basis, act as an advocate for the local area and get involved in national issues whether in opposition or in government.

The students asked Greg and Huw a variety of interesting questions on subjects including the Coalition Government, immigration, the number of people who vote during elections and the challenges facing an MP.

Greg and Huw were impressed by the students’ knowledge of British politics and their keen interest in the subject. Speaking at the College Greg said “I really enjoyed talking to the politics students at Bexhill College. They are a bright bunch, asked thoughtful questions and certainly disproved the view of some that young people aren't engaged with politics."

Huw Merriman commented ““I was really pleased to meet local students at Bexhill College. The Q&A demonstrated to me how much our young people in Bexhill care about, and are engaged in, political debate. I hope to return to the College and organise an election meeting for the students with my political opponents during the General Election campaign.”

Robert Hastie Head of Section and Karen Hucker, Principal commented “We were really pleased that Greg and Huw were able to meet the students and give them the opportunity to ask questions. This type of experience really brings the learning alive. The students were excited to hear real life examples of what they had heard about in theory and are enthused about their forthcoming visit to the Houses of Parliament
